Bike MS Stories

Why do YOU ride?

Members of the Colorado-Wyoming MS community have submitted their stories to share with you. We hope that reading about the courage, challenges, and optimism experienced by those whose lives are affected by MS will motivate you to registervolunteer or donate to Bike MS.

Wendy Luck Why I Ride

Wendy Luck

This will be my 7th year riding in the Colorado Bike MS. I was diagnosed with MS in 1991, when my children were both very small. I find that having a goal to ride 150 miles at Bike MS each year gets me out on my bike more often than I might go otherwise.

Most importantly, riding is a way to stay healthy and to raise funds for MS research. On days when I am tired and the weather isn’t perfect, I get out on my bike anyway because I know I need to train for the ride – it’s an excellent motivator! I can’t take long hikes or walks because MS makes my feet hurt after a while but this doesn’t happen on a bike.

Bicycling is freedom, health, strength, joy, and serenity, all rolled into one for me! Riding is most fulfilling when I ride with my best friend, my husband. He supports me along the way and helps me overlook the hard work and sweat with his encouragement and love.

I participate in the I Ride With MS program on the ride and find that wearing the jersey is a way for me to put a face to the disease for other riders. They are unfailingly encouraging and enthusiastic when they ride past me. This helps motivate me that little extra bit when the going gets hard at mile 50, 60, or 70 but I also hope it helps them realize that Bike MS is about people and not just about a faceless fundraising goal.

Why Do I Ride

Steve Clayton

Why do I ride? I was diagnosed in 2001. A good friend of mine mentioned this bike ride for Multiple Sclerosis and suggested we should do it. I borrowed a bike and rode my first MS 150 to Estes Park and back. I was hooked. There is nothing like crossing a Bike MS finish line. Blood, sweat and tears!

Cycling has kept me healthy and very stable with my MS. I thank God every day that I can still get up and keep moving. My team Ain’t Too Proud to SAG started out with just 6 people and has grown over the years to include 50 of the greatest comrades I could have asked for in this battle of my life. My family has been so supportive over the years.

We must STOP this disease NOW and RESTORE what so many of us have already lost. And ultimately END MS forever and prevent it from occurring in the future.

For my kids Jake and Zach, I will ride my ass off year after year so they won't have to worry about MS. I have MS, but MS does not have me!
